Hindu, Christian, Buddhist and Quaker

John Bouttell

John has lived in Todmorden for nearly 40 years and been a member of SGI-UK, the lay organisation of those practising Nichiren Buddhism, for as many years.

Before retiring, his last employment was managing mediation services resolving neighbour disputes.

John spent some time as a volunteer advisor with Citizens Advice and in The Acorn Centre in Todmorden where he supported people learning basic computer skills.

In his spare time, John goes walking regularly, dances in Hebden Bridge park most weeks – when the weather permits. He is also a member of the Philosophy and World Cinema Groups of U3A Todmorden.

The Revd Canon Hilary Barber

I've been a Priest in the Church of England for some twenty five years, before which I was a professional musician. I spent twelve years in Manchester Diocese before coming over the Pennines to Yorkshire to take up the role of Vicar of Halifax Minster. Much of my work is across the private, public and third sectors, helping the faith communities integrate into society and to serve their local communities.

I've been Vice Chair of Calderdale Interfaith for the past fourteen years, and have now stood down to take on a national role as Co Chair of Interfaith Network UK.

Alex Mathie

A member of Hebden Bridge Quaker Meeting for over 20 years, Alex serves on the Calderdale Interfaith Steering Group as the Brighouse West Yorkshire Area Quaker Meeting representative and has been a Trustee of Calderdale Interfaith since 2020.

Alex lived in the London area for most of her life before coming to Yorkshire in the 1990s and is a working actor who performs regularly in theatre productions all over the UK and on national radio. Understanding, learning from and working with people of different cultures and faiths is a constant source of inspiration in her spiritual life and work.

Professor P B Anand

Anand has been a long-term resident of Halifax and represents Hindu faith from the South Indian philosophical traditions inspired by the principles of equality and oneness enunciated by Ramanujacharya (1017-1137 CE).

Anand has been an academic in the field of sustainability and public policy and is forever curious about the conflict between ethics and economics and the potential role of faith in helping resolve deep moral conflicts including on issues related to climate emergency, river water disputes and our confused and masculine approaches in our relationship with nature.
